Middle School
Porter Academy is Expanding! Due to feedback from our parents and the limited middle school options that celebrate students with learning differences, Porter Academy is expanding to include grades 6 through 8 in the fall of 2010.
Our middle school includes the same individualized academic, social, emotional, behavioral, and therapeutic attention that our elementary program provides. Porter Academy works with students who have difficulties with attention, sensory processing, dyslexia, memory, fine and gross motor skills, auditory discrimination, language processing, phonemic awareness, grammar/syntax, visual perception, social interactions, and self-esteem. Middle school students will additionally receive transitional and social skills needed to succeed in a larger school environment.
Porter Middle School Curriculum
Each classroom offers small class sizes limited to 14 students with a minimum of one teacher and one teacher associate. Occupational and Speech Therapists provide additional small group and individual services to enable each child to reach his/her educational potential. While all of our students may not be working on level to enter middle school, they can still be exposed to and develop skills parallel to their peers.

A SPRINGBOARD FOR THE FUTURE
Porter Academy Middle School Program is an ideal environment for students who need a supportive, engaging environment. Students have an opportunity to gain self-confidence academic skills and life skills. There is an increased emphasis on personal achievement and development of healthy peer relationships.
Each student has an Individual Education Plan that prepares his/her for the transition to a high school environment. This plan helps each student to identify and achieve their goals.
LEADERSHIP AND SELF ADVOCACY
Our middle school students are active participants in evaluating their own work. Our planners help the parents to participate in their child’s education by signing off each night on the check sheet and daily achievement of their child.
As our students progress, we encourage them to take on responsibility for their learning, challenge themselves and challenge themselves through both school and community involvement.
ACADEMIC PROGRAM – STRUCTURED FOR ACHIEVEMENT
Our students are grouped for academics that allows each child to progress at his or her own pace through a curriculum of Language Arts, Reading, Mathematics, Social Studies and Sign language. Additional mini-courses invite explorations of areas such as art, music, cooking, consumer education, social awareness, conflict resolution and others.
